The Richenshire chaotic six
Richenshire is the capital and major city of the Richenshire fiefdom of the Hershelt kingdom.
Location: Richenshire is the westernmost city in the Hershelt kingdom, lying 740 miles west of the capital Hershelt, and located at the headwaters of the Elarret River delta. It is located on the south bank of river.
City Layout: The inner city is made up of 4 sections. The Palace in the south-western portion, The religious district in the south-east, the riverside district in the north-west and the Labyrinth in the north-east. The inner city is surrounded by a 30 foot tall double wall in a rough semi-circle. 3 gates allow access to the inner city from the outer. The east and west gates and a third gate in the SE part of the wall that is framed by 2 tall spiraling wizard towers which spiral together at the top. The outer city spreads mainly to the east and south from the city on the rockier ground. There are 10 interlocking districts of mercantile, residential only and industrial in the outer city. Beyond the outer city there are two suburban areas, Treeton and Axfield which developed from the refugee camps for the elves and dwarves respectively.
History: In the beginning the population was contained within the inner city. As refugees from the Plains wars gathered to the city the refugees began to occupy the areas around the city wall.
The Labyrinth used to be the seedy part of the city and the area was enchanted to shift and hide the occupants to keep the prying eyes of the city guards. After the plains wars ended, and with changes in the laws of the land the labyrinth began to change from a black market district to a mercantile district.
The Palace grounds were much smaller in the early years of the city. The Duke’s palace was little more than a large manor. The grounds were home to many of the upper-class citizens and families. As many residence started to move out of the city the palace and the palace grounds were expanded.
The riverside district was an industrial section with a moderate sized ship yard and a variety of shops and warehouses. After the Plains wars the area became home to the upper class families who were displaced by the expansion of the Palace grounds. The ship yards were moved out of the inner city. This area is home to the great library and the school. Both the Palace grounds and the riverside district carved out a portion of their areas in the middle of town to create a bazaar.
The last area in the inner city is the religious district. In the early days it was where much of the population of the city lived. The great church of Heironeous has been on these grounds since the first day. As other religions began to be more prominent in the city more properties were converted to churches. This area still has many residents, but the major religions are represented with grand cathedrals and churches.
As the plains wars ended the refugee camps slowly formed the outer city. There was a time of great poverty until the duke mandated the education initiatives and equal rights for all of the recognized races, namely Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Halfings and Humans.
Politics: The Duke of Richenshire holds 3 seats on the Grand Council in Hershelt unlike the other fiefdom’s 2 seats. The king, wary of the duke’s potential power, has mandated that the dukes of the land are not allowed to raise an army to patrol their lands. This has caused many communities to go unprotected that are far from the local capitals. The duke is allowed to have a city guard, and the city can have a citizen’s militia to protect local townships. The kings army can be requested, but operated only under the orders of the king and his generals and are given authority over all the land.
The duke collects taxes for the king and is allowed to keep 50% for management of the city. The current Duke, Falswyth Ulster is a half elf, or 80% elf, and has been ruler for nearly 400 years. Over time the dukes have gone from strictly human to mostly elf as the dukes married elvish women.
Economy: The city itself is a bustling port city, with trade from nearly all parts of the continent and to Milointon, the main metropolis on the broken continent. About 80% of all goods come through Richenshire on their way to the capital, up the Elarret River.
Environment: Richenshire is in a very humid climate. It is relatively warm during the day most days and most days begin with rain showers as storms roll in from the warm ocean. To the West is the delta with the Great Marsh, the main waterway of the Elarret River goes to the south of the delta and is much less marshy. To the South and South East is the Plains of Plenty with rolling hills for hundreds of miles To the north is a mix of high rocky and forest covered land and low marshes towards the coast.
